Discrimination of Women

In Malaysian Literature in English and also in a lot of the literature we studied in A Survey of Prose Forms and Poetry, we learnt a lot about the values and the social context of the old times, a lot of post-colonial stuff in Malaysia and how the society is back then. Among all the things, one thing kept coming back again and again - the discrimination of women.

Just watch this normal MV of a Korean group. And I went to look at Lady Gaga's Bad Romance video, it's seriously disturbing. I will not put the video up here.

You see how women is depicted there? In the Korean one, it's not so bad but if you notice how the camera navigates and the focuses on the girls' butts (where all the guys love so much) and how they dance, isn't it rather obvious that the discrimination still goes on today? Especially in Lady Gaga's video. It's so horrid that I cannot continue watching it. Why do they have to wear so short? It's no different than wearing a bikini which would entice the men more. And what's the difference between a bikini and underwear?

Back then the discrimination is how women were treated, how they were never given a chance to talk, how their views are unimportant, how they were mistreated by men and end up as prostitutes or their seventh wife, and how they were treated and viewed as an object, an object of pleasure, trophy, decoration and perhaps, even a maid?

What's so different for today? Perhaps the law has paid more attention to the rights of women. Perhaps the law has protected women which is a great improvement. But what about how women are viewed now?

Even in Christian circles in Britain, I heard women speakers are looked down and paid less attention as men. Now, all these entertainment wanted women, almost stark naked, waving and shaking their bums and their chests, parading them like that. The worst would be those who take pride in being models of porn.

Aih, the world is still corrupted.
