What did you learnt in the previous year?
What are you grateful for about the previous year?
What are the things you want/need to let go before entering into the new year?
What are the things you want/need to bring into the new year?
What are the things you want to achieve/expect in this new year?
I have done this before just that this year it is a bit late but most of the time I did it according to my semester timing rather than by the normal world year (a bit cacat but I am returning to the real world soon!). I personally find it useful as it helps me to properly transition from one season to the next. It is almost like Harry Potter doing the teleporting thingy. If you don't transition properly you end up spilched.
How would we be 'spilched'?
Some part of you are still tied to the old, you carry unnecessary baggage into the new year which bogs you down and you could not fully embrace the new year being so unprepared and so on so you end up drifting through the new year which will become old and you find yourself not fully making use of the year, missed opportunities and you feel depressed inside knowing you wasted yet another year. Not nice, isn't it? Sadly a lot of people do that.
At the end of the year, they take out their resolutions they set at the eve of that year and find out that they hardly achieve the few that they set for themselves. Heck some treat it as a game, taking it out and go, "Hey, I got this and that!" ticking two lucky incidents they were able to achieve that out of a list of 10 items and they go hey ho happy setting another set of new year resolutions that they hope to achieve but not doing anything to achieve them. New years resolution can be really useful if people really are serious and make full use of it but I would digress if I were to go into this.
While I don't have time to fully review my previous year (and I don't think I am in the right mind/emotions to do so as well as I am rather homesick so I am a little biased now) when I go home on a quiet night under the moon light that shines into my room, I will take time to review the questions stated earlier on.
The few awesome things that highlights 2012 for me were the spiritual upgrades I had. I cannot remember the specifics now as it would take up much time to salvage through previous posts and diaries and so on. I am also grateful for the academic experience of doing the research and completing my thesis. The experience was incomparable and for that I am truly grateful.
I am also grateful for the people I met and struggled with. I have become wiser, stronger and more resilient than before. Still imperfect but much better than before. I am really grateful for the kind people that God sent in my way. Meeting them cheer me on, encouraged me and showed me that there are still friendly and nice people in the world. (Course mates have been pleasantly evil because of their brokenness. So yeah.) Constantly making new friends and cutting off some friends, not easy but necessary. Some - they made the choice.
So this new year, what do we expect from it? What do we want from it? Find the answers and work towards it. It would be much more fulfilling than to just passively go through the year waiting for life to throw opportunities at you. "Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you."
Enter with expectation, with anticipation, with a strong desire and determination to be better through all means knowing that to have success there is failure, it requires hard work and sacrifice.
May your new year be the best year yet filled with places of advancement and betterment, may God bless you with everlasting peace, joy, love and prosperity!
