What do you think about spreading rumours? It's sort of "fun", even harmlessly evil & deliciously self-gratifying, isn't it?! Well it must be, right?!, since so many people do it. I mean who can resist a good gossip - nevermind if it's totally untrue & completely unchristian - with the potent potential to actually "steal, kill & destroy" (sound familiar?) if gone unchecked.
Maybe we think, "if I can only get people to talk about the "sin" of others, then hopefully, they don't have to talk about mine". We can get so busy focusing on (what we think are the weaknesses of) others that we fail to consider our own weaknesses. There is a way to handle a rumour - if you're truly sincere - Go straight to the source!!!
I have a few more thoughts on dealing with rumours...1) Discern the character of the initiator or group before you consider it even worth repeating, (2) Always give people (ie the "victim") the benefit of doubt - especially if he or she has had a good testimony, (3) Always give people a chance to explain or defend him/herself. You would want all of the above if you were the "victim" wouldn't you?!
And, if you think it wise not to reveal the name(s) of the person(s) who's spreading the rumour (that would help with point 3 below), then I encourage you to exercise the same wisdom in not spreading it further. The same "O sorry, I can't tell you who told me" should also include "O sorry, I don't feel it right to spread what I am not sure to be true".
I think if the same passion that applies to the spreading of rumours could be applied to the spreading of the Good News, this world would be reached in our generation! Maybe that's what we're really made for to spread something:)) Only difference is whether it would be for good or evil. How about it young people?! Dare to take up the challenge??
BTW, & this is my final say..., to those out there who have been victims of unfounded rumours - don't spend the rest of your life trying to prove yourself to others. Don't spend all your energy trying to "get down to the bottom of it". Don't even bother trying to shut people up. More importantly, don't act surprised:) Jesus already warned us that this would happen - & increasingly so even as the end draws near.
Truth is truth - no matter if anyone believes in it - no matter how you try to bend or bury it - no matter who tries to distort or disregard it... No matter how long it takes, truth always prevails! Know the truth, love the truth, live the truth & the truth will set you free. If you have the truth, you're truly free, no matter how people try to lock you up & throw away the key! You're free - indeed!!
