If churches understand the uses of tongues, in fact, there is nothing to be afraid of. They need to understand when to use and and when not to, all the protocol of the usage which can be found in 1 Corinthians 14. In fact, all that you need to understand about tongues can be found there. Either there or a few chapters before and after. The whole scope is there for you to study and understand. The use of tongues is biblical.
Some start to argue with this verse
27If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God. (1Cor 14:27-28)And ask, musn't tongues be interpreted if used?
But guys, look properly at verse 28 and please look at all the words in the verse. "If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God." We can derive two things from just this verse.
1) Tongues are not to be practiced out loud when there is no interpreter in the main church congregation so that it will not disrupt the whole service, to maintain order "the speaker should keep quiet in the church" - Corporate use.
2) If there is no interpreter tongues can be practiced in a very quiet manner where it cannot be heard very visibly "speak to himself and God" - practice it as praying to God, it's between the speaker and God, personal use.
In fact, there are 4 types of tongues to be exact. Let's look at Acts 2:1-4 NKJV
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
From the passage, we can see "divided tongues" and from other translations, "tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each" which indicates there are more than one type of tongues. And from earlier on, we've identified two major uses of tongues - personal and corporate. In Acts, from the happenings after the Spirit of God came and how Paul talks about the gift of tongues in the upcoming chapters, different types of tongues can be identified, namely four.
1) Tongues for personal prayer.
2) Tongues for intercession. - Praying for others
3) Tongues as a sign to unbelievers.
- these tongues occur when the HS transcends our intellect and gives us the ability to speak in other language on this earth that we have not previously had any training or ability to speak. This is give n as the Spirit of God wills; we cannot just decide to operate in it, and we most often do not even realise when we are functioning in it.
4) Tongues given for interpretation.
- these tongues when interpreted are similar to prophecy.
More details on this upon request.
So, you can see there are more than one type and the last type is a ministry type which not everyone have. But the one for personal prayer, everyone can have if they want it. Please do post any questions or whatever. I'm open for discussion and answering any doubts or questions :)
